There is no debate that Dwayne Micheal Carter Jr. is a hip-hop superstar that has taken over the industry. Also known as his stage name Lil Wayne, Carter has been at the top of many music billboards. He has been in the center spot light now for a while and was just released out of jail on weapons charges that had him locked up for eight months. Producing multiple albums and hit singles, Carter has definitely gathered a large fan base and that has made him all of his money. There is one unique thing about Carter that has separated him from other artist. His lyrics don't make sense and sometimes have no real meaning. The only reason they are in the song is to make his song have a musical flow that he achieves with his diction and the ability to rhyme words together. Carter uses these rhyming words along with a likable beat to produce his anticipated new rap songs.
Wayne can produce many songs by just rhyming words together and making a beat that they can go with. People love his music though without the lyrics having to make sense. Other rappers can express their feelings through their music and can give an incite into their personal struggles throughout their lives. Lil Wayne gives no clue into the life of Dwayne Carter Jr. and instead talks about living as a celebrity with tons of money and doing what ever he wants. Music can expose an artist personality and lifestyle. Eminem has been rapping a long time and one can see his struggles and his life story through his work and lyrics. People can relate to him and enjoy being able to feel the emotion that he expresses in his work. Carter puts little emotion into his songs and is still rated and admired close to Eminem.
When Eminem wrote his single “My Name Is”, he wrote about his struggle as a white rapper in a mostly black industry. Eminem uses the song to show the white stereotypes and also a catchy rhythm that helped start his career and to make his mark in hip-hop. Carter doesn't write about how he made it to the top of the charts and doesn't show appreciation for the people who have put him there. Most of his lyrics in songs are written about fornicating with women because of his money. Just like in his song “Fireman” he writes, “you catch my gals legs open you better smash that, don't be surprised if she asks where the cash at.” This shows his mind is always thinking about his money and how he can have sex with more women. Carter lacks the depth in meaning that other rappers have.
Carter has made his mark in history his own way. Wayne lyrics make him money and don't make sense. In Wayne's new song “6 foot 7 foot” he writes “jumped in a wishing well, now wish me well.” This doesn't make sense other than just rhyming the two thoughts. People enjoy his music for its flow of diction and his word choose. This does not mean Wayne is what he calls himself, the “best rapper alive.” Carter has influenced the hip-hop industry and has made himself millions of dollars, but he is not “the best rapper alive” like he states in his song “The Best Rapper Alive.” Wayne has done well with his career, but not the best. Other artist have made more money and have gained more respect and listeners than Carter has.
Other rap artists have worked hard and dedicated their lives to making meaningful rap music. For example, Tupac and Notorious B.I.G., represented where they came from with their music and ended up being shot and killed. Dwayne Carter shot himself in the chest on accident. Surviving Carter raps in his song “3 Peat” about the incident saying “two more inches I'd've been in that casket”. Many rappers are infamous for being shot and shooting yourself should not qualify you to be matched with other hip-hop legends. Tupac came out of the Black Panther movement and related to his listeners with his music. He had meaning to his writing and that is what made him a great rapper not by boasting about the money he has and the girls he has sex with.
Dwayne Carter has room to improve his music and has a great talent of rhyming words. Carter just needs a meaning and needs a strong purpose behind his writing before he can be considered “the best rapper alive”.
